1275 Minnesota St / 60Six (Gallery 201)

Hours: Tues. through Sat. noon-5pm
Reception: Saturday, September 12 5-7pm

60SIX is pleased to present Isabelle Maynard’s eighth exhibition with the gallery,
“This is my Nature”.

A native of Toulouse, France, Maynard works in a spontaneous style utilizing movement and drawing combined with painted washes of oils on plaster covered canvases. Mostly working large scale, she often starts the drawing with her eyes closed. The paintings reflect the lyrical fusion of her unplanned marks with the serenity of her emotional responses.

“This is my Nature” is a series where the artist responds to nature in two ways, reflecting what is outside of ourselves and what is inside ourselves. The artist says, “I like to give back what I get from nature. Nature is powerful, fragile, and deeply connected to our own lives. What happens to the earth ultimately touches all of us. My paintings hold both sides of this reality: the beauty and the sorrow, the calm and the chaos, the life that flourishes and the life that is threatened. I paint not only what I see, but what I feel when I witness the changes happening around us.”

The work contains a mood of melancholy, but also of reflection, and some paintings act as a meditation, portraying the hopeful regenerative power of nature. Other works utilize energetic line work in drawings of abstract figures seemingly pondering the human condition.

The exhibition is presented in Minnesota Street Project, gallery 201 a short distance from the gallery’s simultaneous show of Jürgen Trautwein’s new project “Under the Volcano” in gallery 211. Both shows will run September 8-26. Receptions on Saturday, September 12.
