Gina M. Contreras: Amor Secreto

Secrets are a complicated thing. Ubiquitous but surreptitious; arising from preciousness or shame. Through velvety, rich colors and detailed patterns, painter Gina M. Contreras reports the emotional trouble of being kept a secret lover in her solo exhibition Amor Secreto at Hashimoto Contemporary San Francisco. A new and vulnerable series of self-portraits, the paintings in Amor Secreto document the artist’s increasing loneliness while she is kept a secret. Still, the artist depicts these layered and nuanced relationships through varying emotional facets, a testament that secrets are never simple.
